An extraordinary soldier and human being, Kristen Beck was the first former U.S. Navy SEAL to transition from a man to a woman. In 2016, the Department of Defense lifted a ban that prohibited transgender people from openly serving in the military (a policy change that the current president wants to reverse)—thanks in part to Kristen's bravery in coming forward. Her story inspired me to create this piece, which I dedicate to Kristin — and the entire LGBT community.

I remember we used to smoke cigarettes behind our office and we talked a lot of shit about life. I remember we used drive around at night with very loud rock n’ roll music. Now, you’re not here anymore, but I remember all the good times we had. To our friendship, and I miss you, brother.

My mom always says, “Life will be very boring if it doesn’t have any challenges.” After 15 years of bitter and sweet life in U.S, I looked around I saw me. I am still standing here alone. Just like my mom, my strong spirit keeps me and I going and me and I facing the challenging everyday.
